Yuri teaches both amateur players and aspiring professional musicians. See below for details.
Yuri’s approach for amateur players
Yuri finds students who play for fun, and perhaps in a band with friends, can be massively helped by lessons with him. Such players will inevitably have questions, and bits of their playing might not be working out. Yuri troubleshoots technique and skills, and gives general guidelines for improvement. He likens it to having computer diagnostics run on your car: he will tell you what needs to be improved, and he can tell you how to do it!
Yuri’s approach for aspiring professional musicians
Yuri believes that the basics of playing, and the technical skills required, must come first. In order to express the music inside you, you must have the means to express it. If you don’t have these means, your playing will fail to live up to your aspirations.
Yuri will listen and diagnose areas that need work, and then give the student exercises to practice. Much like a consultation, the student is given a clear route to progress, and so varying time between lessons is not of great significance. Yuri also shares his tips for concentrated, focused practice. He has found many aspiring professional double bassists can waste half a day in unfocussed playing which isn’t directed towards solving problems and can actually make playing worse. His experience and direct instruction in how to practice will make this lack of efficiency a thing of the past.

Even for the amateur musician, an ability to write out or read tunes in the clearest possible way, including melody lines and chord symbols, opens up the possibility of reading and playing music far more quickly.
Music written or interpreted incorrectly wastes a lot of practice and playing time. Knowing what you’re doing will massively improve your enjoyment and the speed at which you and your friends can play tunes together.
Yuri undertakes lessons in basic music theory, covering everything from note length and key signatures to time, in order to help you read written music and jazz lead sheets.
Music theory can be taught purely theorectically, or at the piano, or with the use of your chosen instrument, which doesn’t need to be the double bass!

Jazz music theory
Yuri will help you acquire thorough knowledge of how to understand and assign chord symbols, which will help you play, or ask others to play, the voicing that you want.
He will work with you on knowledge of jazz scales and jazz language, and on any other aspect of jazz theory that you would like to cover.
Jazz music theory can be taught purely theorectically, or at the piano, or with the use of your chosen instrument, which doesn’t need to be the double bass!

Yuri has been composing jazz for 20 years. He studied composition for five years with the head of the Composition Department at the Moscow Conservatory, Prof. Albert Leman.
Yuri can help composing students or professionals develop not only their understanding of key concepts, but also to discover their own unique voice.
He can help you:
Develop a general understanding of the form of composition, its starting point, development and closure.
Build your instinct as to how to unfold your compositions, and to understand what will sound good and what will not.
To avoid trivialities and banalities and combine traditional moves with non-traditional moves to avoid predictability.
Yuri is happy to work on students’ own compositions, whatever stage of development they may be in.
Jazz composition can be taught theorectically, and/or at the piano.
